Former Morocco international and African champion Ahmed Faras has passed away at the age of 78, following a battle with illness.

Faras is regarded as one of the standout names in Moroccan football history, after a long career with Chabab Mohammedia and the national team.

He led Morocco to their Africa Cup of Nations triumph in 1976, the country’s only title in the competition to date, and was one of the key figures of that historic squad.

At club level, Faras also left his mark with Chabab Mohammedia, helping the team achieve major domestic success during his time.
