Héctor Herrera has detailed the thinking behind his decision to return to the Houston Dynamo, insisting the move was about finishing what he started and restoring a relationship that became strained at the end of his first spell in MLS.
The Mexican midfielder rejoined Houston this month after a turbulent departure last season, when his final weeks with the club were overshadowed by frustration, public criticism and a messy goodbye that left his future in doubt. At the time, it appeared unlikely the 34-year-old would ever pull on a Dynamo shirt again.
Instead, Herrera is back in orange, and he says the choice was driven by a combination of family comfort, familiarity with the club and a belief that Houston remain a place where he can compete and make a difference. He acknowledged that the way things ended previously was far from ideal, but stressed that he has taken responsibility for his part and wants to move forward.
“I felt I still had something to give here,” Herrera explained, pointing to the stability his family found in the city and the connection he built with teammates and supporters during his earlier stint. He also noted that returning to a club where he knows the environment can be important at this stage of his career.
Herrera’s exit last year came after he was left out of the lineup and reacted angrily on the sideline, a moment that quickly became a flashpoint. The midfielder later voiced his disappointment, and the episode contributed to an uneasy finish to his time in Houston. The Dynamo moved on, and Herrera explored options elsewhere amid speculation about a return to Mexico.
Yet discussions reopened in recent weeks, and both sides found a way back to the table. Herrera said conversations with club leadership helped clear the air and made it possible to reset. From Houston’s perspective, bringing back an experienced international who understands the league and the dressing room offers depth and leadership as the team looks to stay competitive in the Western Conference.
The Dynamo have not framed Herrera’s return as a symbolic move. They expect him to play a meaningful role, whether as a starter or in a managed rotation, and to provide a calming presence in midfield. For Herrera, the message is simple: he wants to help the team win and ensure his Houston chapter ends on better terms.
“I wanted to come back and do things the right way,” he said, adding that he feels motivated by the opportunity to rebuild trust and contribute on the pitch. After an exit that seemed final, Herrera’s comeback is now one of MLS’s more unexpected reunions—and one both player and club hope will be defined by performances rather than headlines.
