Referee expert Ahmed Al-Ali has confirmed that the decision to send off Vissel Kobe’s Yuya Osako during their FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Al Ahly was correct. The incident, which proved pivotal in the match, occurred in the 40th minute with the score level at 0-0.
Al-Ali, speaking to Kooora, explained the rationale behind the red card shown by referee Szymon Marciniak. “Osako committed a foul that denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity,” Al-Ali stated. “He was the last defender, and his challenge on Al Ahly’s Hussein El Shahat was a clear professional foul. The referee’s application of the law was accurate.”
The match itself was dramatically altered by the dismissal. Playing with a man advantage for over 50 minutes, Al Ahly capitalized to secure a 1-0 victory, booking their place in the final against Real Madrid on 12 February 2024. The only goal came from a penalty converted by Percy Tau in the 59th minute, a direct consequence of the sustained pressure on the depleted Vissel Kobe defense.
Al-Ali further clarified that the decision was not based on the severity of the tackle alone, but specifically on the denial of a clear goal chance. “The location of the foul and the positioning of the attacker meant a direct opportunity was prevented. This is a textbook red card offense according to the laws of the game,” he concluded, putting to rest any debate over the pivotal moment.
