Joe Cole has urged Manchester City to move for Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton in January, suggesting Pep Guardiola should consider a deal if the champions strengthen their squad in the winter window.
Speaking about City’s recruitment, Cole pointed to Wharton as a player with the quality to step up at the Etihad and fit Guardiola’s style. The former England international believes Wharton has shown enough at Palace to attract interest from the very top level.
Cole also said City could look at Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi as another option for January, with the centre-back continuing to impress in the Premier League and for England. He indicated that if City were to land Guehi, it could make sense for them to explore a move for Wharton as well.
Wharton only joined Palace from Blackburn earlier this year, but he has quickly become a key figure in midfield, earning praise for his calm passing and work rate. Cole’s view is that the 20-year-old already looks ready for a bigger challenge.
With City expected to remain active in the market if the right player becomes available, Cole believes Wharton is one to watch as January approaches, and says Guardiola should not ignore the opportunity if it presents itself.
