Manchester United are reported to be back in the market for a high-profile midfield signing, with fresh claims suggesting the club could revive interest in a player previously valued at around £100 million.

United’s recruitment team has been weighing up its options ahead of the January window as Erik ten Hag looks to add more control and quality in the centre of the pitch. While the club has invested heavily in recent windows, the midfield remains an area where United are expected to strengthen, particularly with injuries and inconsistency affecting performances.

The latest reports indicate United have returned to discussions around a long-term target who has been on their radar for some time. Although there is no suggestion a deal is close, the renewed focus is seen as part of planning for the second half of the season, with United assessing whether a move in January is realistic or whether a summer approach would be more achievable.

The player in question has continued to impress at club level and is viewed as someone capable of making an immediate impact in the Premier League. However, any transfer would come with major financial demands. A fee in the region of £100 million has previously been attached to the midfielder, and United would need to balance spending with financial rules, as well as potential outgoings in the squad.

United have also been linked with other midfield options in recent months, but the idea of returning for an established, elite-level target is likely to appeal as they look for reliability in big matches and greater intensity in possession. Ten Hag has often spoken about improving United’s ability to dominate games, and a top-class central midfielder is regarded as key to that plan.

As it stands, the situation appears to be at the exploratory stage rather than a firm bid. January deals at this level can be difficult, especially if the selling club has no intention of weakening mid-season. Even so, the report suggests United are again considering whether they can make a statement signing to help push their season back on track.

With the window approaching, United are expected to keep monitoring the player’s situation closely and could decide to act if the conditions become more favourable.
