Manchester United must now be taken seriously in the Premier League title race after a statement win over Arsenal, with Michael Carrick’s side showing a freedom and sharp edge that has been missing for long spells this season.
In Carrick’s first match as caretaker, United produced one of their most controlled performances of the campaign and beat Arsenal 3-2 at Old Trafford. It was a result that underlined the quality in the squad and suggested that, with the handbrake off, United can still challenge at the top end of the table.
United started quickly and went ahead through Bruno Fernandes, who finished well to give the home crowd early belief. Arsenal, though, responded and found a way back into the contest, refusing to fold even as the game grew more intense.
The visitors hit back through Martin Odegaard, who levelled the score and set up a breathless spell in which both sides traded openings. United then regained their advantage when Cristiano Ronaldo struck, and the forward was at the heart of the biggest moments as the match opened up.
Arsenal equalised again through Bukayo Saka to make it 2-2, keeping the contest on a knife edge. But Ronaldo had the final say, scoring his second of the night from the spot to restore United’s lead once more.
United saw out the closing stages to secure a 3-2 victory and a crucial three points in a game that swung repeatedly. The win also ensured Carrick remains unbeaten during his interim spell, following the 2-0 Champions League victory at Villarreal and the subsequent 1-1 league draw at Chelsea.
There is now a clear sense that the talent in this United group can flourish under a simpler, more direct approach, and the performance against Arsenal offered a glimpse of what could be possible if that level can be maintained.
