A new international report has rejected claims of “favouritism” at the Africa Cup of Nations, stating that Morocco were actually the team most affected by refereeing mistakes during the tournament.
The report, which reviewed key decisions in the competition, placed the Moroccan national team at the top of the list of sides considered most harmed by errors from match officials at AFCON.
It comes amid ongoing debate on social media and in some media outlets, where accusations had been made that refereeing decisions were tilted in Morocco’s favour. The report said the analysis does not support those allegations.
According to the same findings, the incidents examined involved decisive moments that influenced matches, highlighting that questionable calls were not one-sided and that Morocco were among the biggest losers from incorrect decisions.
The report’s conclusions have reignited discussion around the standard of officiating in the tournament, with renewed calls for clearer accountability and better use of officiating support tools to reduce costly mistakes in future editions.
