Premier League clubs urged to sign McKennie on free transfer

Premier League clubs have been urged to move for Weston McKennie on a free transfer, with the Juventus midfielder being backed to succeed in England despite a difficult loan spell at Leeds United.

The 25-year-old USMNT international spent the second half of the 2022-23 season at Elland Road after joining from Juventus, but the move did not work out as hoped. Leeds were relegated from the Premier League at the end of that campaign, and McKennie returned to Italy.

Even so, McKennie’s brief time in Yorkshire has not stopped belief growing that he could still be a strong fit for the English top flight. Former Aston Villa and England striker Gabby Agbonlahor has told the Premier League’s biggest sides to consider a deal, suggesting the midfielder has the energy and tools to make an impact if given the right platform.

Agbonlahor argued that McKennie’s all-action style would suit the Premier League, and that his Leeds stint should be viewed in context rather than treated as a final verdict on his ability to handle English football.

McKennie remains on Juventus’ books, but the situation is being framed as an opportunity for clubs ready to act if he becomes available without a fee. With top teams always searching for value in the market, the midfielder’s profile and experience at both club and international level has been presented as a deal worth exploring.

The call is clear: if McKennie does end up on the market as a free agent, Premier League clubs have been told they should not let the chance slip, even with the memory of a nightmare Leeds spell still fresh.
