Real Sociedad have been crowned Copa del Rey champions for the 2023-2024 season, defeating Atletico Madrid 2-0 in a thrilling final at the Estadio de La Cartuja in Seville on Saturday, May 6, 2024.
The Basque side struck early, silencing the Atletico supporters in the 10th minute. A swift counter-attack found Mikel Oyarzabal on the left, and his pinpoint cross was met by a powerful header from Alexander Sørloth, giving Real Sociedad a dream start.
Atletico Madrid, favorites heading into the match, struggled to find their rhythm in the first half. Their best chance fell to Antoine Griezmann, but his curling effort from the edge of the box sailed just over the bar.
The second half saw Diego Simeone’s men push forward with more urgency, but they were caught on the break again in the 67th minute. A long ball released Sørloth, who held off his marker and squared it for Takefusa Kubo. The Japanese winger made no mistake, slotting the ball calmly past Jan Oblak to double the lead.
Despite late pressure from Atletico, including a header from Álvaro Morata that was well saved by Álex Remiro, Real Sociedad’s defense held firm. The final whistle sparked wild celebrations among the players and fans in blue and white, marking their first Copa del Rey triumph since 1987.
“This is for all our fans who have waited so long,” said captain Mikel Oyarzabal after lifting the trophy. “We knew we had to be perfect today, and the team executed the plan brilliantly. This victory is historic for us.”
For Atletico Madrid, the defeat is a significant blow in a season where they were aiming for silverware. Manager Diego Simeone acknowledged his team’s shortcomings, stating, “We congratulate Real Sociedad. They were more effective and deserved it. We did not perform at our required level, especially in the decisive moments.”
The victory secures Real Sociedad a place in the 2024-2025 UEFA Europa League group stage and completes a remarkable cup run that saw them overcome top-tier opposition.
