Rennes head coach Julien Stéphan has provided an update on defender Jeremy Jacquet following Liverpool’s agreement to sign him in a deal worth up to £60 million, after the Premier League club beat Chelsea to the transfer.
Speaking after the move was confirmed, Stéphan admitted Rennes were always facing a tough task to keep hold of the highly rated youngster, and said the club had secured the best outcome possible from the negotiations.
“It’s the best deal we could hope for,” Stéphan said, as he addressed Jacquet’s situation and the size of the agreement reached with Liverpool.
The Rennes boss also revealed the club’s stance throughout the process, explaining that while they wanted to keep the player, the proposal on the table was too significant to turn down.
Liverpool moved ahead of Chelsea in the race and wrapped up the transfer, with the overall package reported at £60m, marking a major sale for the Ligue 1 side.
Jacquet is now set to make the switch to Anfield, with Stéphan making clear the move is a strong piece of business for Rennes and one that reflects the defender’s rapid rise and growing reputation.
