Cristiano Ronaldo and Merih Demiral could be facing disciplinary action following the latest edition of the Saudi Clasico, according to a legal consultant.
The two Al Nassr stars were involved in incidents during the highly charged match against Al Hilal, which took place on December 1, 2024. The game ended in a 1-1 draw, but the focus has now shifted to potential post-match sanctions.
Legal consultant Ahmed Al-Amir confirmed that both players may be subject to penalties based on the match referee’s official report. “If the referee recorded the incidents in his report, the Disciplinary and Ethics Committee will have the authority to impose sanctions,” Al-Amir stated.
The consultant explained that Ronaldo could be punished for a gesture he made during the match. “The Portuguese star made a hand gesture that could be interpreted as provocative. According to Article 57 of the Saudi Football Federation’s disciplinary regulations, such actions can lead to a fine of up to 20,000 Saudi riyals and a one-match suspension,” he said.
Demiral, meanwhile, faces a separate issue. The Turkish defender was involved in a heated exchange with an opponent after the final whistle. “Demiral’s behavior after the match could be classified as unsportsmanlike conduct. This falls under Article 48, which carries a fine of 10,000 riyals and a possible ban of up to two matches,” Al-Amir added.
The incidents have sparked debate among fans and pundits. Some argue that the reactions were minor and should not warrant punishment, while others insist that strict action is necessary to maintain discipline in Saudi football.
Al Nassr’s management has not yet issued an official statement regarding the matter. The club is reportedly waiting for the referee’s report before deciding on any next steps.
The Disciplinary and Ethics Committee is expected to review the case in the coming days. If the committee decides to proceed, both players could learn their fate before Al Nassr’s next league fixture on December 7, 2024.
This is not the first time Ronaldo has faced scrutiny in Saudi Arabia. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was previously fined for an obscene gesture during a match in April 2024. Demiral, who joined Al Nassr in the summer of 2024, has also had previous disciplinary issues during his time in European football.
For now, both players remain available for selection, but the looming threat of suspension could impact Al Nassr’s plans for the upcoming matches.
