Roy Keane has softened his stance on Michael Carrick after previously insisting the former Manchester United midfielder should not be handed the job on a full-time basis at Old Trafford.
Carrick was placed in interim charge following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure and began his short spell with a 2-0 win away at Villarreal in the Champions League, a result that secured United’s place in the last 16. He then oversaw a 1-1 draw at Chelsea in the Premier League before signing off with a 3-2 home victory over Arsenal.
Keane had initially questioned whether Carrick should be considered for the permanent role, pointing to a lack of experience for a position of such size. However, speaking after United’s run of results under the caretaker, the former captain performed a notable U-turn, praising Carrick’s calm approach and the way he handled three high-pressure fixtures.
Keane acknowledged the results Carrick delivered in a difficult period and credited him for steadying the team, while also recognising the challenge of stepping into the role during a turbulent moment. Carrick’s brief time in charge ended with United unbeaten across his three matches, before the club moved on to their next appointment.
