Thun has completed one of the most remarkable turnarounds in Swiss football history, rising from the second division to become Swiss champions in 2026. Just 12 months ago, the club was fighting in the Challenge League. Today, they sit at the top of Swiss football.
The fairytale was sealed on Saturday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Basel at the Stockhorn Arena. A first-half strike from midfielder Nuno da Silva and a second-half header from captain Marco Bürki proved enough, despite a late Basel consolation goal from Zeki Amdouni.
Thun’s rise has been nothing short of extraordinary. The club earned promotion to the Super League at the end of the 2024-25 season, finishing second in the Challenge League. Few expected them to survive in the top flight, let alone challenge for the title.
But under head coach Mauro Lustrinelli, the team built momentum from the opening weeks of the 2025-26 campaign. A run of seven wins in their first ten matches set the tone. By the winter break, Thun sat third in the table, just four points off the lead.
The second half of the season saw them grow stronger. Key victories over Young Boys and Servette in March and April pushed them into title contention. A 3-0 win over Lugano on matchday 32 put them top for the first time.
“This is a dream,” said Lustrinelli after the title-clinching win. “Nobody believed we could do this. But this group of players never stopped believing. They wrote history today.”
Thun finished the season with 68 points, two clear of second-placed Young Boys. Basel ended third, six points adrift. The club’s first top-flight title in its history was confirmed with one match to spare.
For a team that was playing in the second tier just over a year ago, the achievement is unprecedented in modern Swiss football. No club had won the Super League so soon after promotion since the league’s current format was introduced.
“We are champions of Switzerland,” said captain Bürki, holding the trophy aloft. “This is for the fans, for the city, for everyone who supported us. We will never forget this season.”
The celebrations in Thun are expected to continue through the weekend. The club has announced an open-top bus parade through the city centre on Monday afternoon. For a team that was climbing the second division just months ago, the view from the top has never looked sweeter.
