Ticket scalping mars Morocco AFCON as Benes urges action

Moroccan fans in vibrant red celebrate as players embrace in joy after a goal during a match against Algeria, reflecting national pride.

Ticket scalping for Morocco’s national team matches has become a major blot on the current Africa Cup of Nations being staged in the Kingdom, despite the strong organisation and the work put in by the authorities.

In comments on the issue, Moroccan journalist Abdelilah Benes called for urgent solutions and tough sanctions, warning that the black market is hurting supporters and damaging the image of the tournament.

Benes stressed that many fans are being forced to pay inflated prices to attend matches of the “Atlas Lions”, saying this situation cannot continue, especially with the high demand around Morocco’s games.

He urged the organisers to tighten control over the distribution and sale process, and to move quickly against anyone involved in reselling tickets outside official channels. Benes also demanded clear punishments that would deter repeat offenders and protect genuine supporters.

The controversy comes as Morocco hosts the AFCON, with expectations that the competition should set a benchmark in terms of management and fan experience. Benes insisted that confronting scalping is essential to ensure fair access to tickets and to preserve the positive atmosphere around the tournament.
