Ryan Giggs was removed from the Premier League’s inaugural Hall of Fame class in 2021 after the league decided it would not include him while he was facing criminal charges.
Giggs had been named among the first inductees when the Premier League launched the Hall of Fame, but his planned involvement was withdrawn before the official announcement. The league made the call because he was due to stand trial at the time.
The former Manchester United winger was charged in April 2021 with assaulting his ex-girlfriend Kate Greville and coercive or controlling behaviour between 2017 and 2020. He was also charged with assaulting Greville’s sister, Emma, in November 2020. Giggs denied the allegations.
The Premier League Hall of Fame was created to recognise the best players in the competition’s history, with the first group revealed in 2021.
Giggs is one of the most decorated players of the Premier League era, having built his legacy during a trophy-laden spell at Manchester United.
In July 2023, Giggs was cleared of all charges after prosecutors said a retrial would not take place. The case had previously ended with a jury unable to reach verdicts in 2022, before a retrial was scheduled and later dropped.
With the legal process ongoing at the time of the Hall of Fame launch, the Premier League opted to remove Giggs from the inaugural induction.
