Bayern Legend Doubts Real Madrid's Achievements

Franz Beckenbauer, the iconic figure of Bayern Munich and German football, has cast doubt on the scale of Real Madrid’s recent successes, particularly their record-extending 15th UEFA Champions League title.

In comments reported by German media, Beckenbauer suggested that Real Madrid’s path to European glory has been facilitated by favorable circumstances. “Real Madrid were lucky in the draws and also lucky in the decisive moments during the matches,” Beckenbauer stated. He pointed to their dramatic late equalizer against Bayern Munich in the 2024 semi-final second leg, scored by Joselu in the 88th minute, as a prime example of this fortune.

The German legend’s critique extends to the overall competitive landscape. He believes the Champions League has lost some of its former difficulty. “The Champions League is not as hard as it was in the past,” Beckenbauer claimed. “Today, there are maybe five or six top teams in Europe. In the past, there were 10 or 12.”

Beckenbauer’s remarks highlight a simmering sense of rivalry and a differing perspective on what constitutes true dominance in European football’s premier club competition.
