Former Saudi Arabian international Fahad Al-Hamdan has launched a strong critique of the Saudi Arabian Football Federation’s decision to appoint Romanian coach Cosmin Contra as the new head coach of the Saudi national team.
Al-Hamdan, speaking on his television program, stated bluntly, “Cosmin Contra is not the right coach for the Saudi national team.” He expressed his surprise at the federation’s choice, questioning the logic behind selecting a coach whose recent career has been marked by instability.
“His last four experiences were failures,” Al-Hamdan argued, referencing Contra’s recent spells in charge. “He was with Dinamo Bucharest and got them relegated. He was with Almería and they were relegated. He was with Guangzhou and they were relegated. He was with Gorica and they were also relegated.”
The pundit emphasized that the national team requires a coach with a proven and stable track record, especially with crucial World Cup 2026 qualifiers on the horizon. He believes the team needs a figure who can build a long-term project, not someone whose recent history suggests a pattern of short-term struggles.
“We need a coach who has stability in his career and who has a clear footballing philosophy,” Al-Hamdan concluded, casting significant doubt on whether Contra is the man to lead the Green Falcons forward.
