Real Madrid midfielder Dani Ceballos was overcome with emotion, breaking down in tears, as he opened up about the painful details of the club’s Champions League elimination last season. The Spanish international revealed new behind-the-scenes information from the fateful night they were knocked out by Manchester City.
The dramatic exit occurred on May 17, 2023, at the Etihad Stadium. After a 1-1 draw in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabéu, Real Madrid were comprehensively beaten 4-0 in the return match, ending their campaign. Ceballos, who came on as a substitute in the 80th minute, described the overwhelming feeling in the dressing room after the final whistle.
“It was one of the toughest moments of my career,” Ceballos admitted. “When we got back to the locker room, no one could speak. There was just silence, and then the tears started. I couldn’t hold mine back. We felt we had let down the fans, the club, and ourselves. It was a deep wound.”
The player confirmed that the entire squad, including veterans and leaders, were visibly devastated. He shared that the coaching staff, led by Carlo Ancelotti, addressed the group, acknowledging the painful defeat but immediately emphasizing the need to focus on the remaining La Liga fixtures to finish the season with a title.
This heartfelt admission comes as Ceballos finds himself at a career crossroads. With his contract set to expire on June 30, 2024, and no renewal yet agreed, his future at the Bernabéu is uncertain. The midfielder expressed a strong desire to stay, stating, “My wish is to continue here. Real Madrid is my home. But I understand this is football, and decisions have to be made for the good of the team.”
Despite the lingering pain from that night in Manchester, Ceballos and his teammates successfully channeled their focus, going on to clinch the Copa del Rey later that season. The club now sets its sights on reclaiming European glory, with the next Champions League final scheduled for June 1, 2024, at Wembley Stadium.
