Morocco settled for a 1-1 draw against Mali on Thursday, a result that was enough to keep the Atlas Lions at the top of Group A, though it left a sense of unfinished business after a performance that promised more.
Playing with tempo from the outset, Morocco looked the sharper side in the opening stages, controlling possession and pushing numbers forward as Mali sat compact and waited for moments to spring forward. The early pressure paid off when Morocco broke the deadlock with a well-worked move, turning sustained dominance into a deserved opening goal.
Mali, however, refused to fold. Gradually growing into the contest, they began to contest second balls and quicken their transitions, forcing Morocco to defend in wider areas. Their persistence was rewarded after the interval when they found an equaliser, punishing a lapse in concentration and shifting the momentum of the match.
The remainder of the game opened up as both teams chased a winner. Morocco increased the intensity and created opportunities through quick combinations and deliveries into the penalty area, while Mali remained dangerous on the counter, carrying a threat whenever Morocco committed bodies forward.
Despite late pressure and a handful of half-chances at both ends, neither side was able to find the decisive goal, and the match ended level.
The draw keeps Morocco in first place in Group A, maintaining their strong position in the standings as the group stage continues. Mali, meanwhile, will take encouragement from their response and the point gained against one of the tournament’s leading contenders.
