Walid Regragui has sparked tension inside the Real Madrid dressing room after openly backing Kylian Mbappe during a difficult period for the French superstar.
The Morocco national team head coach, who led his country to a historic World Cup semi-final in 2022, made his comments in a recent interview. Regragui stated that Mbappe is going through a natural adaptation phase at the Spanish giants and urged patience from the club’s supporters and management.
“Kylian needs time. He arrived at a new club, in a new league, with new teammates. This is not easy for any player, even one of his quality,” Regragui said. “I have no doubt he will succeed at Real Madrid. The club must support him, not pressure him.”
According to sources close to the dressing room, Regragui’s remarks have not gone down well with several senior players at the Santiago Bernabéu. Some members of the squad feel the Moroccan coach has overstepped his role by commenting on internal club matters. Others believe his public defence of Mbappe could create a divide within the group, especially given the high standards expected at the club.
The tension comes at a delicate moment for Real Madrid. The team is fighting on multiple fronts in the 2025-2026 season, and Mbappe’s form has been inconsistent since his blockbuster move from Paris Saint-Germain in the summer of 2024. The French forward has scored 18 goals in all competitions this campaign, but his performances have drawn criticism from some fans and pundits.
Regragui, who has a close relationship with Mbappe dating back to their time together in the French national setup, insisted his comments were made out of respect for the player and the club. “I am not interfering. I am simply stating what any football person can see,” he added.
Real Madrid officials have declined to comment on the matter. However, sources indicate that head coach Carlo Ancelotti is aware of the situation and is focused on maintaining harmony within the squad ahead of a crucial run of fixtures in La Liga and the UEFA Champions League.
Mbappe himself has not responded to Regragui’s statements. The 27-year-old is expected to start in Real Madrid’s next league match against Athletic Bilbao on Saturday, March 15, 2026.
