Landon Donovan has shared a remarkable story from his time in MLS, explaining how the San Jose Earthquakes once let a key player slip away in circumstances that still feel hard to believe.
Speaking about the early days of the league and how business was often handled differently then, Donovan said the Earthquakes effectively lost one of their standout names because the club didn’t secure the player properly at the right moment. In Donovan’s telling, it was not about form, injuries or a manager’s decision. It was a case of timing, paperwork and missed opportunities — the kind that can change a team’s future.
Donovan described how the situation unfolded with the player’s contract status and the way MLS roster rules worked at the time. With different systems in place compared to today’s transfer market, clubs didn’t always have full control in the same way European sides do. That created room for confusion and, in this case, a costly mistake.
The former United States men’s national team captain made it clear that the player was someone San Jose valued highly and wanted to keep. But the Earthquakes were left exposed once another path opened up for the player to move on. Donovan suggested the club simply didn’t realize how quickly things could shift, and by the time they acted, the door had already closed.
While Donovan did not frame it as a scandal, he said it should serve as a reminder of how quickly top talent can be lost when details are overlooked. Today, clubs spend huge amounts of time on contracts, options and protections. But Donovan’s story highlighted a period when MLS teams were still learning those hard lessons in real time.
The Earthquakes have had several eras of rebuilding since those early years, and the league itself has grown into a far more structured environment. Still, Donovan’s recollection offered a glimpse into how even a star player could slip through a club’s hands — not because of a big-money transfer battle, but because the fine print was not handled properly.
For San Jose supporters, it is another “what if” moment to add to the team’s history. For the rest of the league, it is a reminder that behind every transfer or exit, there is often a story that goes far beyond what ends up on the transaction list.
