Chelsea are expected to look at centre-back options again when the January transfer window opens, with injuries and inconsistency in defence leaving the squad short of reliability. The club have invested heavily in recent windows, but there is still a sense that Mauricio Pochettino’s side need a calmer, more commanding presence at the back if they are to push up the table.
With that in mind, here are four centre-halves Chelsea could consider for a mid-season move.
Antonio Silva (Benfica)
Antonio Silva has quickly become one of Europe’s most watched young defenders. The Benfica academy product is composed on the ball, reads danger early and does not look out of place against top-level opposition. He has already shown he can handle pressure, a key trait for anyone stepping into a high-profile role at Stamford Bridge.
A deal would not be simple. Benfica are known to drive hard bargains, and Silva’s value is rising fast. Still, Chelsea have routinely targeted top young talent, and the Portuguese international fits their recruitment profile.
Gonçalo Inácio (Sporting CP)
Sporting CP’s Gonçalo Inácio is another name likely to be on Chelsea’s radar. Comfortable in possession and strong in build-up play, he suits teams that want to play out from the back. Inácio is also used to operating in a defensive system that asks centre-backs to be brave on the ball and cover wide areas.
Sporting would want a significant fee, and competition for his signature could be strong. But his age, experience in European matches and tactical flexibility make him a realistic option if Chelsea decide to move.
Jean-Clair Todibo (Nice)
Jean-Clair Todibo has rebuilt his reputation in Ligue 1 and is now seen as one of the standout defenders in France. He brings athleticism, recovery pace and the kind of one-on-one defending Chelsea have sometimes lacked. Todibo also looks comfortable defending higher up the pitch, which would help in a system that pushes the back line forward.
Nice may be open to selling at the right price, though any January deal could depend on finding a replacement. For Chelsea, Todibo would offer a more proven, ready-made solution than some of the younger names on the market.
Marc Guéhi (Crystal Palace)
Marc Guéhi is not a new face to Chelsea. The England international came through the club’s academy before leaving for Crystal Palace, where he has developed into a leader and regular starter. His positioning, composure and ability to defend crosses would all be welcome in Chelsea’s current set-up.
Because he is established in the Premier League and already understands the environment, Guéhi could be one of the safest bets. The challenge is that Palace would be reluctant to lose a key player mid-season, particularly to a London rival. Chelsea would likely need to pay a premium to make it happen.
January is rarely straightforward, and Chelsea will have to be smart about both price and fit. But with pressure building for improvement, reinforcing the defence could be one of the clearest routes to stability in the second half of the campaign.
