Manchester United co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe has apologised after comments he made about migrants sparked criticism, saying he is “sorry that my choice of language has offended some people”.
Ratcliffe issued the statement after he was questioned over remarks in which he said migration had “swamped” parts of the UK. The INEOS chairman and United minority owner insisted he had not intended to cause offence and moved to clarify his position.
“If I have offended anybody then I apologise,” Ratcliffe said. “I’m sorry that my choice of language has offended some people.”
Ratcliffe added that he believes migration is an important issue that should be discussed, but stressed that he was not making a personal attack on individuals. He said his comments were aimed at the wider political debate and the pressure on communities, not at migrants themselves.
The United co-owner’s remarks drew attention because of his growing influence at Old Trafford following INEOS’ investment, with Ratcliffe now taking a leading role in football operations as the club continues to plan major changes behind the scenes.
Ratcliffe’s latest statement was released in response to the backlash, with the 71-year-old making clear he wanted to address concerns about the wording he used and to reiterate that he did not mean to insult or stereotype anyone.
