Ayoub Oufkir has officially committed his international future to the Netherlands, ending speculation about a potential switch to Morocco. The decision comes after the 21-year-old defender received his first call-up to the Netherlands U21 squad, a move that confirms his choice to represent the country of his birth.
Oufkir, who plays for SC Heerenveen, was a standout performer for Jong Oranje in their recent 3-0 victory over Georgia. He played the full 90 minutes in the European Championship qualifier, helping his side keep a clean sheet in a dominant display.
In a revealing statement, Oufkir confirmed that the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF) never made contact regarding a senior call-up. “Morocco has never called,” the defender said, clarifying the situation. “I was only approached for the U23 team. I am Dutch, I was born here and I have always played for the Dutch youth teams. My choice was quickly made.”
His integration into the Dutch setup has been seamless. National team coach Ronald Koeman has already taken notice, inviting Oufkir to train with the senior squad last October. The young defender described that experience as “very special,” highlighting the positive path his career is now on with the KNVB.
With his international allegiance now settled, Oufkir can focus entirely on his development. His clear commitment and strong performances for the U21s mark a significant step in his career, solidifying his place within the Dutch football system.
