Bruno Fernandes has revealed he always believed Michael Carrick would become a “great” manager, pointing to the former Manchester United midfielder’s short spell in charge at Old Trafford as proof of his coaching qualities.

Fernandes played under Carrick in late 2021, when the ex-United captain stepped in as interim boss following Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure. Carrick oversaw three matches, beating Villarreal and Arsenal and drawing with Chelsea before handing over to Ralf Rangnick.

Speaking about Carrick’s path into management, Fernandes said he could see early on that the 42-year-old had what it takes to succeed in the dugout, praising his calm approach and the way he handled the pressure of leading the first team during a difficult period.

Carrick has since built his reputation in management away from United, taking charge at Middlesbrough and earning plaudits for his work in the Championship.

Fernandes’ comments come as United continued their strong run against Tottenham, sealing a fourth consecutive win over Spurs. The result underlined their recent control of the fixture, with Fernandes again one of the key figures in midfield as United kept their momentum going.

With Carrick’s coaching career continuing to develop, Fernandes insists his former team-mate’s brief time at the helm at United already showed the traits needed to make a real impact as a manager.
