Caf sanctions players over referee insults at Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has handed down sanctions against players after incidents of insulting match officials during the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.

The disciplinary measures came following reports of verbal abuse directed at referees in games played at the tournament, with CAF moving to act to protect match officials and enforce its rules on conduct.

Among the cases covered by the decision is an incident involving a referee who previously took charge of a match for Algeria, a detail that was revealed as CAF announced the punishments.

CAF’s ruling targets the players involved in the misconduct, with the sanctions linked specifically to the الإساءة للحكّام (abuse of referees) during the competition in Morocco.

The confederation did not treat the matter lightly, stressing through its disciplinary action that respect for referees remains a key part of maintaining order and fairness in African football competitions.
