Di Maria says Ronaldo is ahead of Messi in professionalism

Angel Di Maria has admitted that Cristiano Ronaldo is “ahead” of Lionel Messi when it comes to professionalism, while saluting his former Real Madrid team-mate’s relentless drive to be the greatest.

Di Maria played alongside Ronaldo during a trophy-laden spell at Madrid and says the Portuguese forward set standards that were hard to match. He believes Ronaldo’s edge is clear in the way he prepares and looks after himself, claiming he is “in terms of professionalism by far” ahead of Messi.

In comments reflecting on the long-running debate around the modern game’s two standout figures, Di Maria praised Ronaldo’s obsession with improvement and his hunger to keep competing at the highest level. He also highlighted how that mentality fuelled Ronaldo’s quest to be recognised as the GOAT.

While making that point, Di Maria did not downplay Messi’s brilliance, but stressed that the difference, in his view, is more about day-to-day habits and approach than talent. For Di Maria, Ronaldo’s relentless routine and mindset are what separate him in that specific area.

Di Maria’s assessment adds another voice from inside a star-studded dressing room, underlining the intensity with which Ronaldo has chased records and trophies throughout his career.
