Gary Neville believes Michael Carrick should not be considered as Manchester United’s permanent manager, even after the club’s first win since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was sacked.

Carrick took charge as interim boss following Solskjaer’s dismissal and oversaw a 2-0 victory over Villarreal in the Champions League on Wednesday. The result secured United’s place in the knockout stage, easing some pressure during a turbulent week at Old Trafford.

However, Neville insisted the former midfielder is not the long-term answer in the dugout. Speaking after the match, the ex-United captain said: “I don’t think he can be the permanent manager, no.”

Neville also revealed the three managers he believes United will look at when making their next appointment, naming Mauricio Pochettino, Erik ten Hag and Brendan Rodgers as the standout candidates for the job at the end of the season.

While Carrick’s first win was an important step and ensured progress in Europe, Neville’s view is that United need an experienced, elite head coach to lead the next rebuild and restore the club to the top level.
