Gary Neville has launched a scathing attack on Chelsea’s ownership, labeling their approach as “insane” and criticizing their transfer dealings as “laughable.” The Manchester United legend and prominent pundit did not hold back in his assessment of the club’s direction under the Clearlake Capital-led consortium.
Neville’s criticism centers on the club’s strategy of offering extremely long-term contracts to new signings. This practice, designed to spread transfer fees over many years for accounting purposes, has seen players like Mykhailo Mudryk signed to deals lasting until 2031.
“I look at Chelsea and I think, what is happening there?” Neville stated. “The owners look like they’re playing a computer game. They’re giving out eight-year contracts to players – it’s insane. You can’t do that. It’s a mockery of the system.”
He argued that such lengthy agreements remove crucial performance incentives for players and create a dangerous long-term financial burden for the club. “Where’s the motivation for the player if he’s got a seven or eight-year contract?” Neville questioned. “And if it doesn’t work out, the club is stuck. These deals are laughable.”
The former England defender also took aim at the sheer volume of player turnover at Stamford Bridge, suggesting a complete lack of a coherent plan. The club has spent over £1 billion on new signings since the takeover in 2022, resulting in a bloated and unbalanced squad.
Neville’s comments come amid a turbulent period for Chelsea, who are languishing in mid-table in the Premier League despite their enormous investment. His analysis points to a deep-seated concern that the club’s transfer policy is not only reckless but could have serious repercussions for their competitiveness and financial stability for years to come.
