Josh Sargent criticized for refusing to play for Norwich

Norwich City captain Josh Sargent looks distressed, with his hands on his head, in his bright yellow goalkeeper kit during a tense moment.

Josh Sargent has come in for heavy criticism after refusing to play for Norwich City, with former USMNT goalkeeper Brad Friedel calling the decision a major mistake.

The Norwich striker has been linked with a move to MLS side Toronto FC, but the focus this week has shifted to a situation at Carrow Road after it was revealed that Sargent declined to feature for his club.

Friedel did not hold back when discussing the episode, warning that players should not take that approach when asked to play. “Bad decision… NEVER do that!” he said, making clear he felt Sargent handled the moment the wrong way.

The USMNT legend also drew a sharp comparison with Newcastle forward Alexander Isak while explaining his point, using the Sweden international as an example of how top players are expected to respond in difficult situations.

Sargent remains a key name in transfer talk, with Toronto FC among the teams credited with interest, but Friedel’s comments ensure the striker’s refusal to play for Norwich will stay in the spotlight for now.
