Atletico Madrid has launched an investigation after a video circulated online showing a supporter directing racist abuse towards Barcelona’s teenage star Lamine Yamal.
The incident occurred ahead of the Champions League quarter-final first leg at the Civitas Metropolitano on Wednesday night. In the widely shared clip, a fan is seen leaning over a barrier, pointing at the 16-year-old winger as he warmed up and shouting, “You are ugly, go play for Morocco!” The insult is a clear reference to Yamal’s Moroccan heritage, despite the player being born in Spain and representing the Spanish national team.
Atletico Madrid released an official statement condemning the act. “We are investigating the incident that occurred with a fan who insulted Lamine Yamal before the match,” the club confirmed. “Atletico Madrid condemns any act of racism or hatred. Such actions are completely unacceptable and do not represent the values of our club or our fans.”
The match itself, a tense and goalless draw, was overshadowed by this pre-match controversy. Yamal started the game for Barcelona and played 77 minutes before being substituted. Despite the abuse, his performance was a bright spot in a match of few clear chances.
This is not the first time Yamal has been subjected to such treatment. The young phenom has faced similar racist taunts in the past, both in stadiums and on social media. The latest incident has sparked renewed outrage and calls for stronger action against discrimination in football.
