Lionel Messi has been told he is already behaving like an Inter Miami “owner”, as the Argentine captain continues to settle into life in MLS and is tipped to remain in the United States for the long term.

Messi joined Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 and has transformed both the club and the league’s profile since arriving in Florida. The World Cup winner has quickly become the face of the project, with his influence stretching beyond matchdays and into the direction of the team.

Speaking about Messi’s impact, former Argentina international Jorge Valdano suggested the forward’s role goes far deeper than simply playing. “Messi is not just a player at Inter Miami, he is acting like the owner,” Valdano said, pointing to the way the 37-year-old has taken responsibility around the club and helped shape the environment.

Messi’s move was always viewed as more than a short stop, and Valdano believes the signs suggest he is not thinking in terms of a quick exit. The Argentine feels Messi is now rooted in America, with his family settled and his presence central to Inter Miami’s ambitions.

The comments come amid continued attention on Messi’s future, but the message from Valdano was clear: the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner looks comfortable in Miami and is expected to stay in the United States for the long haul.
