Manchester United have been backed to make a move for Chelsea star Cole Palmer if they hire his former manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Palmer, a boyhood United fan, has been one of Chelsea’s standout players since arriving from Manchester City and is now being linked with a possible switch to Old Trafford if Pochettino ends up in the United dugout.
Pochettino is currently in charge of the USMNT, having taken the job after leaving Chelsea at the end of the 2023-24 season. But the Argentine has already been mentioned as a potential candidate should United decide to make a change.
Former Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel believes Pochettino’s presence could open the door to a huge transfer, even if a deal would be difficult and controversial given Palmer’s importance at Stamford Bridge.
“It’s very strange,” Mikel said, as he discussed the idea of Palmer leaving Chelsea and the possibility of United looking to take advantage if Pochettino is in place.
Palmer’s love for United has been well known, but he is under contract at Chelsea and remains central to their plans. Any move would require Chelsea to agree to sell, and there has been no indication from the club that they are willing to consider offers.
For now, the talk is only hypothetical, but the link between Pochettino and Palmer has been highlighted again as United are urged to act if they want to land a player who grew up supporting them.
