Manchester United’s hopes of landing one of Europe’s most exciting young forwards have taken a major hit, with the player now expected to remain in Spain despite heavy interest earlier this summer.
Reports in recent weeks had suggested United were monitoring the situation around Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembélé, a player long admired at Old Trafford for his pace, direct running and ability to play on either flank. The Premier League side were linked with a move that could have risen to around €120 million, reflecting both Barcelona’s valuation and the scarcity of elite attackers on the market.
However, Dembélé appears to have made his position clear. The France international has reportedly turned down an approach from Paris Saint-Germain, a club believed to be ready to offer a significant contract in an attempt to bring him back to Ligue 1. PSG’s interest had been viewed as a serious threat to any English pursuit, given their financial strength and the appeal of playing in his home country.
Instead, the indication now is that Dembélé wants to continue at Barcelona, where he has been working to establish himself as a key figure after an injury hit spell since his arrival from Borussia Dortmund. While Barcelona have sometimes been open to major sales due to ongoing financial pressures, the player’s stance makes a deal increasingly unlikely unless there is a late change of heart.
For United, it means attention may have to shift elsewhere as they continue to look for a proven wide option who can add goals and creativity. The club have explored several forward targets in the market, but with Dembélé seemingly off the table, any move for a top-tier attacker may now depend on availability, price and the willingness of selling clubs to negotiate.
As things stand, PSG have been told “no,” and United are left watching from the outside as Barcelona move closer to keeping one of their most high-profile talents.
