Paul Scholes has backed Michael Carrick to take a major step in his coaching career and says it “wouldn’t surprise” him to see the former Manchester United midfielder land the Leicester City job.
Carrick has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough last year, after guiding the club into the play-offs during the 2022-23 season. He remains highly rated in the game following his coaching spell at Old Trafford, where he worked under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and later took charge as interim manager for three matches in 2021.
Speaking about Carrick’s next move, Scholes believes his ex-team-mate has the standing and ability to take on a top role. “Wouldn’t surprise me,” Scholes said, when asked about Carrick being linked with the Leicester post.
Leicester are weighing up their options following changes behind the scenes, with the Foxes preparing for another crucial period as they look to get back on track. Carrick’s name has been mentioned among the candidates, and Scholes feels the job would suit him.
Scholes pointed to Carrick’s calm style and his education from years at the highest level, suggesting those traits could carry over to a club with Leicester’s ambitions. Carrick, who made more than 450 appearances for United and won multiple trophies, has built a reputation as a thoughtful coach since stepping into management.
For now, there has been no confirmed decision from Leicester, but Scholes’ backing adds weight to the growing sense that Carrick is ready for another opportunity in the dugout.
