In a deeply personal decision, Moroccan striker Reda Kharchouch has announced his immediate retirement from professional football. The 30-year-old is stepping away from the game to dedicate himself fully to the care of his young son, who is battling a serious illness.
Kharchouch, who most recently played for RKC Waalwijk in the Dutch Eredivisie, confirmed the news in an emotional interview. He revealed that his son’s health condition has been the sole reason for ending his career. “This is the hardest choice I have ever had to make, but my family comes first,” Kharchouch stated. “My son needs me now, and I have to be there for him.”
The striker’s career spanned several clubs, including notable spells at NAC Breda and RKC Waalwijk in the Netherlands. He joined RKC in the summer of 2022 and made 24 league appearances for the club, scoring three goals. His final professional match was RKC’s 3-2 defeat to Almere City on the last day of the 2023/24 Eredivisie season.
Kharchouch expressed his gratitude to the football world for the opportunities he was given but emphasized that his focus is now entirely on his son’s recovery. The specific nature of his son’s illness has not been publicly disclosed by the family. There has been no official statement from his former club, RKC Waalwijk, regarding his retirement at this time.
His departure marks the end of a professional journey cut short by circumstances beyond the pitch, with the well-being of his child taking clear precedence over his athletic career.
