Senegal have secured the biggest prize money payout in Africa Cup of Nations history after winning the 2021 edition of the tournament in Cameroon.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) confirmed that the champions will receive $5 million, a record figure for AFCON. Senegal earned the title after beating Egypt on penalties in the final, following a 0-0 draw after extra time.
CAF also announced increased rewards across the competition, with runners-up Egypt taking $2.75 million. Third place went to Cameroon, who will receive $2.5 million, while fourth-placed Burkina Faso are set to collect $2.25 million.
The new structure continues down the standings. Teams eliminated in the quarter-finals will each get $1.3 million, while sides knocked out in the round of 16 will take $800,000. Teams that finished third in their groups will receive $700,000, and those ending the group stage in fourth place will take home $650,000.
Senegal’s triumph, led by their victory over Egypt in the final, now comes with a financial reward that sets a new benchmark for the Africa Cup of Nations.
