Dominik Szoboszlai has revealed he “did my homework” before scoring a free-kick during Liverpool’s Champions League win away at Marseille.
The midfielder explained that his set-piece strike was not down to luck, but preparation. Szoboszlai said he studied how Marseille’s goalkeeper set up for free-kicks and noticed a detail he could use when the chance arrived.
When Liverpool were awarded the free-kick, Szoboszlai stuck to the plan he had made in advance. He aimed for the area he had identified and got the finish he wanted, turning his research into a goal on a big European night.
Szoboszlai’s comments underlined how seriously he takes set pieces, and how much work goes on behind the scenes even for moments that look instinctive in the stadium. The Hungary international stressed that he had prepared specifically for that situation and was ready when the opportunity came.
