Wayne Rooney has revealed he would only consider returning to management for two clubs after difficult spells at Birmingham City and Plymouth Argyle.
The former Manchester United and England captain has been out of work since leaving Plymouth, having previously endured a short and troubled stint at Birmingham. Rooney has now admitted that, if he does go back into coaching, it would only be for Manchester United or Everton.
Speaking about his future in the dugout, Rooney made it clear he is not actively chasing another job and would need the right opportunity to tempt him back.
Rooney began his managerial career at Derby County before later taking charge of DC United, Birmingham and Plymouth. His time at Birmingham was cut short, while his Plymouth reign also ended without the impact he had hoped to make.
Despite those setbacks, Rooney says he has not closed the door on coaching completely, but insisted his next move would have to be something special — and he namechecked only two clubs as realistic options.
The revelation underlines where Rooney still sees his strongest connection, with Manchester United and Everton the only sides he would return to the touchline for.
