Walid Regragui has revealed he offered his resignation as Morocco head coach after an AFCON final controversy, just four months before the start of the World Cup.

The Morocco legend, who guided the Atlas Lions to a historic fourth-place finish at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, said he was ready to step aside following the fallout surrounding the AFCON final in which Morocco were beaten.

Regragui explained that the situation became so tense that he told the Moroccan football authorities he would leave if they felt it was best for the national team.

He also confirmed the decision ultimately did not happen, with the federation choosing to keep him in charge despite the reaction that followed the final.

Morocco now continue under Regragui’s leadership as preparations build towards the World Cup, with the coach insisting his focus remains on keeping the squad united and competitive at the highest level.
