Vinicius Junior is becoming a ticking time bomb for Real Madrid. The Brazilian winger, once seen as the club’s future star, is now at the centre of growing frustration both on and off the pitch. His recent performances and behaviour have raised serious concerns within the club, with some sources describing him as a “ticking time bomb” that could explode at any moment.
The 2026 season has not started well for the 25-year-old. In the opening matches of the campaign, Vinicius has struggled to find his best form. His decision-making has been questioned, and his tendency to get involved in unnecessary confrontations with opponents has become a recurring issue. During the recent 2-1 defeat to Barcelona in La Liga on October 26, 2025, Vinicius was visibly frustrated. He was booked for a reckless challenge in the 34th minute and was substituted in the 72nd minute after a series of poor passes and a heated exchange with Barcelona defender Jules Kounde.
Off the pitch, the situation is no calmer. Reports from inside the Valdebebas training ground suggest that Vinicius has been increasingly isolated from some of his teammates. His relationship with head coach Carlo Ancelotti is said to be strained. Ancelotti, known for his calm approach, has reportedly held several private meetings with the player since the start of 2026, urging him to focus on his game and avoid distractions. However, the message does not seem to have fully landed.
The club’s hierarchy is also watching closely. President Florentino Perez has always backed Vinicius publicly, but behind the scenes, there is growing impatience. The Brazilian was signed for €45 million in 2018 from Flamengo, and while he delivered crucial goals in the 2022 and 2024 Champions League finals, his inconsistency remains a major concern. In the current season, he has scored only 4 goals in 12 appearances across all competitions, a return that falls well short of expectations for a player wearing the number 7 shirt at Real Madrid.
One incident that has particularly angered the club occurred during the Champions League group stage match against AC Milan on November 5, 2025. Vinicius was seen arguing with teammate Jude Bellingham after a missed pass in the first half. The argument continued in the dressing room at half-time, forcing senior players like Luka Modric to step in and calm things down. Real Madrid went on to lose that match 1-0, a result that put their qualification for the knockout stages in jeopardy.
Some former players have also weighed in. Speaking to Spanish radio station Cadena SER on November 10, 2025, ex-Real Madrid forward Predrag Mijatovic said: “Vinicius has enormous talent, but talent alone is not enough at this club. He needs to understand that every game is a test. Right now, he looks like a player who is carrying too much weight on his shoulders. The club must help him, but he must also help himself.”
Despite the criticism, there are still those within the club who believe Vinicius can turn things around. His dribbling ability and pace remain world-class, and he has shown in the past that he can rise to the big occasion. The question is whether he can find the mental strength to do it again. With the second half of the 2025-2026 season approaching, Real Madrid cannot afford to carry a player who is more of a liability than an asset. The clock is ticking, and Vinicius must decide whether he wants to be the hero or the problem.
