Al Ahly Youth Club’s dream of reaching the 2023-2024 AFC Champions League final was shattered in the most dramatic and controversial fashion on Wednesday, April 24, 2024. The Emirati side fell 1-0 to Japan’s Yokohama F. Marinos at Al Maktoum Stadium, losing the semi-final tie 3-2 on aggregate, but the match was decided by a pivotal refereeing decision that has sparked widespread outrage.
The decisive moment came in the 51st minute. Al Ahly Youth’s striker, Yahya Al Ghassani, was brought down inside the penalty area by Yokohama goalkeeper William Popp. Replays clearly showed contact from Popp, who failed to reach the ball. However, to the disbelief of the home players and fans, the on-field referee, Ma Ning of China, did not award a penalty. The situation was reviewed by the Video Assistant Referee (VAR), but after a brief check, the original decision of no penalty was shockingly upheld.
This non-call completely shifted the momentum of the match. Yokohama F. Marinos, who had lost the first leg 2-1 in the UAE, capitalized on the reprieve. Just seven minutes later, in the 58th minute, Brazilian forward Anderson Lopes scored the only goal of the night, sending the Japanese team through to the final against Al Ain of the UAE.
The aftermath was one of sheer frustration for Al Ahly Youth. Club officials and players were left stunned by the officiating. In a strongly worded official statement released after the match, the club confirmed it will file a formal complaint with the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). The statement explicitly accused the refereeing team of a “clear error” that directly influenced the outcome of the match and the identity of the finalist.
“The club will submit an official protest to the AFC regarding the clear refereeing error that occurred in the match,” the statement read, highlighting the “obvious penalty” not given to Al Ghassani. They emphasized that this mistake “deprived the team of a historic opportunity to reach the final of the most prestigious Asian club competition.”
This controversy casts a long shadow over what was a tightly contested semi-final. Al Ahly Youth had performed valiantly over two legs but were ultimately left to rue a decision that has dominated the post-match discussion. Their Asian journey ends in heartbreak, while Yokohama F. Marinos advance to the final on May 11 and May 25, 2024.
