Benin coach: We are not favorites to beat Egypt

Benin head coach Gernot Rohr said his side are not the favorites to overcome Egypt, stressing that the Pharaohs remain one of Africa’s strongest teams.

Speaking in a video statement, Rohr played down any talk of Benin “toppling” Egypt, insisting that his players must approach the challenge with humility and full focus.

“We are not favorites to beat Egypt,” Rohr said. “Egypt are a big team in Africa, with great quality and experience.”

The Benin coach pointed to Egypt’s history and the strength of their squad, noting that facing the seven-time AFCON champions is always a difficult task, especially given the level of their players and the pressure that comes with wearing the national shirt.

Rohr added that Benin will prepare seriously and try to deliver a strong performance, but without pretending that the match is easy or that the balance of power has changed.

He underlined that his team’s target is to compete and make things difficult for Egypt, while also learning from the encounter and continuing to build the group for the next challenges.
