Diego Simeone has apologised to Vinicius Junior and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez after an incident involving the Atlético Madrid coach during the Spanish Super Cup.
Atlético and Real met in Saudi Arabia in the semi-finals of the competition earlier this month, with Real eventually winning 5-3 after extra time to reach the final.
After the match, Simeone was asked about Vinicius and the winger’s behaviour, with the Atlético coach responding in a way that caused controversy. Simeone later admitted his comments were a mistake.
“It was wrong of me,” Simeone said, confirming he has already spoken directly to Perez and also reached out to Vinicius to apologise.
The Atlético boss explained he did not intend to disrespect the player and acknowledged he should have handled the question differently in the aftermath of the defeat.
Real went on to win the Spanish Super Cup by beating Barcelona 4-1 in the final, while Simeone has now moved to draw a line under the episode and focus on Atlético’s season.
