Newcastle head coach Eddie Howe has criticised a competition rule that will allow Manchester City new signing Antoine Semenyo to play against the Magpies in the Carabao Cup.
Semenyo, who has completed a £65 million move to City, is eligible despite joining after the draw was made, and Howe has questioned whether that should be the case in a cup competition.
Speaking ahead of the tie, Howe made it clear he is not aiming his frustration at City or the player, but at the regulations that permit late additions to be registered and used immediately in the same tournament.
Howe’s comments come as Newcastle prepare for the Carabao Cup meeting with Pep Guardiola’s side, with Semenyo now in line to feature against Howe’s team under the current rules.
The situation has renewed debate around player eligibility in domestic cups, with Howe suggesting the rule leaves teams open to facing opponents strengthened mid-competition, even after match-ups have already been set.
What is now confirmed is that the current Carabao Cup registration rule allows Semenyo to face Newcastle, despite his transfer being completed after the draw.
