simeone explains barcelona's champions league exit

Atlético Madrid manager Diego Simeone has offered his analysis on why Barcelona were eliminated from the UEFA Champions League, describing the nature of their exit as a reflection of modern football’s fine margins.

Barcelona’s journey in the competition ended on 16 April 2024 after a painful 4-1 defeat (6-4 on aggregate) to Paris Saint-Germain in the quarter-final second leg at the Estadi Olímpic Lluís Companys.

Simeone, speaking to Radio Marca, pinpointed the pivotal moment. “Barcelona were better until the sending off,” he stated, referring to the 29th-minute red card shown to defender Ronald Araújo for a last-man foul on Bradley Barcola. “That moment changed everything. It’s the small details. With 11 men, Barcelona were clearly superior.”

The Argentine coach elaborated that such dramatic turns are intrinsic to the sport today. “This is football. These things happen in modern football. It’s wonderful, isn’t it?” Simeone said, using the phrase “¡Qué maravilla!” (“How wonderful!”). “A team can be better, but a single incident changes the entire story. That’s the beauty and the cruelty of it.”

He contrasted this with Barcelona’s performance in the first leg, which they won 3-2 in Paris. “In the first match, they were very strong, very solid. They achieved an excellent result away from home,” Simeone noted. However, the early dismissal in the return leg completely shifted the dynamic, allowing PSG and Kylian Mbappé, who scored twice, to overpower the Catalan side.

Simeone’s comments underscore a season of what-ifs for Barcelona, who now turn their focus to securing the La Liga runner-up spot and preparing for the 2024-2025 campaign, with an eye on a deeper Champions League run in 2026.
