Tottenham have been warned they could find themselves in a genuine relegation dogfight after Cristian Romero was sent off in their defeat to Manchester United.
Spurs were beaten 2-0 by United in the Premier League, but the game swung in the second half when Romero saw red. The dismissal left Tottenham with 10 men for the closing stages and proved costly as they were unable to recover.
Wayne Rooney, speaking after the match, defended Romero over the incident that led to his sending-off. Rooney insisted he could understand the defender’s actions and suggested the challenge was not as bad as the reaction to it.
Rooney also warned Tottenham that results like this can quickly drag teams into trouble, claiming they are now in a “genuine relegation dogfight” if they do not turn things around soon.
The defeat added to a difficult run for Spurs and sharpened the focus on their discipline, with Romero’s red card coming at a time when the team could not afford to lose control of the contest.
