Uefa announces punishment for racist abuse of Vinicius

Uefa has announced its punishment in the case of racist abuse directed at Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior during a Champions League match.

The European football governing body confirmed on Thursday, 2026, that it has sanctioned Prestiani, the club involved in the incident, for the discriminatory behaviour of its fans.

The decision follows an investigation into events that took place during the first leg of the Champions League knockout stage tie between the two sides. Vinicius was subjected to racist chants from a section of the home crowd at the stadium.

Uefa’s disciplinary body ruled that Prestiani had violated its regulations regarding racist conduct. The club has been ordered to play its next European home match behind closed doors as a direct punishment.

In addition to the stadium closure, Prestiani has been fined a significant sum. The club must also display a banner condemning racism at all future Uefa competition matches, with the message: “No to Racism.”

The ruling comes after months of pressure on Uefa to take stronger action against racist incidents in football. Vinicius has been a frequent target of abuse in Spain and across Europe, sparking widespread condemnation from players, clubs, and human rights organisations.

Real Madrid released a statement welcoming the decision, saying it “sends a clear message that racism has no place in football.” The club also reiterated its full support for Vinicius.

Prestiani has the right to appeal the sanction within the timeframe set by Uefa’s disciplinary regulations.
