Germany’s national team coach, Hansi Flick, struck a tone of regret as he reflected on his team’s shock exit from the 2022 FIFA World Cup group stage, insisting his side deserved more from their campaign in Qatar.
“We are incredibly disappointed,” Flick stated. “Looking at the tournament, we had the quality and we showed in moments what we are capable of. In my opinion, we deserved to qualify for the knockout rounds.”
Germany’s fate was sealed after a 4-2 victory over Costa Rica in their final Group E match was not enough, following a stunning 2-1 loss to Japan and a 1-1 draw with Spain. The 2014 champions finished third in the group on goal difference.
Despite the early elimination, the German Football Association (DFB) has confirmed its continued faith in the 58-year-old manager. Flick revealed that the next step for the team is already planned: a training camp in Frankfurt from May 22 to May 26, 2023.
“We will analyze everything thoroughly, every detail,” Flick explained. “The immediate focus is on the upcoming training camp in May. It will be an important period for us to start our preparations and build a foundation for the future.”
The coach emphasized that the work to rebuild and prepare for the 2026 World Cup begins now. “We have a clear path ahead. We must learn the right lessons from this experience to come back stronger,” he concluded.
